The First Baptist
Church of Coeburn was organized as the Missionary Baptist Church of Guest’s
Station in March 1881 by the Rev. OL Terry of the Clinch Valley Association. The
organization took place with eight charter members in a log building. On August
8, 1896 the church called its first regular pastor, the Rev. JR Craft. He led
the church to construct a place of worship on Grand Avenue in 1896 where the
Church of God of Prophecy is presently located.
In 1915 during the pastorate of the Rev. AB Brooks, it was decided to build a
larger church in a more central part of town. In March 1917 work began on the
new church. It was completed in less than a year at a cost of $34,000. The
educational building was completed in 1969.
Thirty-nine pastors have faithfully served the church over the years. A more
detailed history of the church can be found in the Coeburn, Virginia Area
History published by the Kiwanis Club of Coeburn in 1994.

MONTHLY BIBLE VERSE Jeremiah 29:11-13 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. |
